In summer 2024, North Dakota will launch Summer EBT, a new grocery benefits program that provides families $120 for each eligible school-aged child to buy groceries when school is out. Summer is a time when many children lose the free and reduced-price meals they get at school, and when households might need a little extra help putting meals on the table. Most families will get these benefits automatically, but some parents will need to apply. Parents or guardians of eligible students will start receiving emails that provide information about the student's eligibility, how to update address information, or how to opt out of the program if they choose. We were not able to get email addresses for every eligible student. Parents or guardians may contact our office if they don’t get an email and want to know if they will receive benefits and/or update their address information. SEBT special email address: NDSEBT@nd.gov SEBT Web Site for Parents: NDSummerEBT.nd.gov Eligibility: Children are eligible for the program if: • the household already participates in SNAP, FDPIR, or TANF, OR • the child attends a school that offers the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Program, and the household income meets the federal requirements for free or reduced-price school meals. Enrollment: NDDPI will use student information that is collected from districts to determine student eligibility and to issue benefits. However, LEAs that don’t report student enrollment information to NDDPI will be asked to provide a spreadsheet with data needed to provide SEBT benefits to their eligible students. Many families will get Summer EBT automatically if they are getting other benefits, but some families may need to apply. • If the household already participates in SNAP, FDPIR, or TANF, they will be automatically enrolled in the Summer EBT program. Households do not need to fill out an application. • If the household is not automatically enrolled and may be eligible, they can apply for Summer EBT by filling out a simple application. How Summer EBT Works: The benefits will be provided on a separate EBT card for each eligible student and can be used to buy groceries. Families will receive $120 per eligible child for the summer. Benefits can be used at authorized retailers, like grocery stores and farmers markets, to purchase healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, meats, and other protein sources, whole grains, and dairy. Valley-Edinburg was represented very well by the six students who attended the FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Bismarck this past week! Kristen and Christine were our FCCLA chapter voting delegates and had the opportunity to listen to the speeches and questioning of the candidates, then vote for both state and national officers. Four students had advanced to state STAR competition after the district competition this past February. STAR means Students Taking Action with Recognition and our students consistently develop projects taking important action on issues involving families, careers or communities! Angelina and Raelyn competed in the Chapter Service Project Portfolio category against projects from 5 other ND schools. They were awarded a silver rating for their project titled "A Mural for Members to Remember"! Their focus was to work with a local artist and Edinburg leadership and residents to create a mural that would eventually be painted on the east wall of the Edinburg laundromat building. Emily and Greta competed in the Chapter Service Project Display category against 8 other schools from across the state. They were also awarded a silver rating for their project "Encouraging Kids with Cards". Their goal was to involve the entire school district in creating at least 100 cards to send to the organization Cards for Hospitalized Kids. They far surpassed their goal with over 250 cards and more arriving every day. A special thanks to local Stampin" Up demonstrator Kris, who supported their project by supply donation and involving paper crafters she knows! The students enjoyed the featured guest speaker, music group Attaboy, and observing the business procedures plus opening and closing ceremonies of the FCCLA organization. After the conference they visited one of Bismarck's public art displays - an entire alley of murals! They titled the alley image "FCCLA Fearless" !
