The Valley-Edinburg School District #118 is a state-accredited K-12 school district that serves more than five rural communities in three counties (Walsh, Pembina, and Cavalier) in the northeast corner of North Dakota. Formerly Valley School District, the communities of Crystal and Hoople reorganized to join the Edinburg School District in 2010 to form what is known today as the Valley-Edinburg School District. Over the last decade, the Valley-Edinburg School District has worked hard to keep three facilities open to its district: grades PK-3 are served in Hoople, grades 4-8 are served in Crystal, and grades 9-12 are served in Edinburg. The district has a combined population of 721, including the communities of Edinburg, Gardar, Mountain, Crystal, and Hoople.

The Hoople building underwent extensive remodeling during the summer of 2021. The school’s main offices were moved to an addition built on the front of the school to help enhance building safety and security. All carpet flooring was also replaced in the school with more hygienic vinyl flooring. Our next priority will be to improve the facilities in the Edinburg school building, beginning with bathroom and locker room remodels, a bus barn addition, and kitchen renovation.

The school district has an enrollment of about 164 students in grades K-12 and also has a PK program that is free to our district. District enrollment has seen a steady increase since the addition of a daycare facility in the Hoople School. Enrollment growth continues to be a goal for Valley-Edinburg School District.

In 2021, Valley-Edinburg School District’s Crystal Middle School was named a National Blue Ribbon School. This award is determined by excellent academic achievement as evidenced in the North Dakota State Assessment. In 2021, Valley-Edinburg School District as a whole was recognized for being in the top 15% of North Dakota schools for academic achievement as well. Our students consistently perform above the state average on the North Dakota State Assessment, and our graduation rate is consistently close to 100% each year. To be the present and future of excellent rural education is the vision for Valley-Edinburg School District.

Our district provides a variety of athletic, academic, and arts-related opportunities to our students. The district has invested heavily in technology throughout the past decade: our students have 1:1 devices and each classroom is equipped with an upgraded Activboard.  The district prioritizes having a viable and guaranteed curriculum that is aligned to the state’s standards; the school’s schedules are analyzed yearly to ensure both academic and social-emotional needs are met for all students.
